The Mersey Giants

We came, we saw, we conquered again!!!
Well done to all the Giants that attended the LFC event last Friday. The whole squad looked by far the most professional team there in the kit and jackets (though the names on the opposition shirts were impressive).

The day started with a skills session run by the LFC Academy coaches with each of the attending teams. Hopefully it gave a flavour of what life is like for a Liverpool FC scholar, it was a good opportunity for the Giants to show their silky skills.

Then we got down to business. Two pitches were set up and each of the four sides played each other in a mini tournament. In the first game the teams were well matched. Jack worked tirelessly down the right hand side but the boys struggled to create many attacking chances. Connor made some excellent saves in the Giants goal after a sustained period of opposition pressure and the first game ended 0-0.

In the second game the boys got a bit more into their stride though goalscoring chances were at a premium as the game was again heading towards a stalemate. That was until a free kick was awarded against the Giants just outside their area. Connor organised his defence best he could but an excellent free kick was curled in at the near post before anyone had time to react. The Lads rallied to get back in the game. Some excellent kicking from Connor got the ball forward to set the Giants on their way but the equaliser eluded them and the game finished 1-0.

In the third and final game the boys really found their feet. The good team play from the previous games seemed to move to the next level and suddenly passes were finding feet and the ball was being moved around the pitch with ease. The Giants took a deserved lead through Reece following a good passing move. The boys were up and running and soon went in search of a second but could not turn their dominance into a goal. Then against the run of play East Leigh equalised. At this point the game could have gone either way but it was the Giants that took the initiative and pushed on to regain the lead. It was from one of these plays that the winning goal came. The ball was won back on the edge of the Giants box and spread out to Owen on the right wing. Following a short burst down the line the ball was put into the centre for Sam but was just too strong for him to control. Luckily Cameron had gambled on the ball reaching the back post as he stole in off the left wing and placed the ball first time into the top corner as the keeper scrambled across his line to save.

So the Giants finished the day on a high, and everyone enjoyed another excellent experience at the Liverpool Academy. A big thankyou to the Liverpool FC coaches for a great afternoon, and lets hope we get to make it visit number three before too long.

Man Of The Match was awarded to Connor by a majority team vote following some awsome saves and excellent kicking. Well done!!!
